Silent Ball: Classroom Rules and How Long Rounds Last

Silent ball is a classroom game where players throw a soft ball to each other without making a sound. If you talk, make a bad throw or drop a ball you should have caught, you are out and sit down. The last player standing wins. Teachers like it because it is quiet, needs only a soft ball, and can fill five spare minutes before a bell.

What you need

  • A soft ball, such as a foam ball, a small beach ball or a beanbag.
  • A class or group of about 8 to 30 players.
  • A judge, usually the teacher, who decides who is out.
  • A fair way to choose the first thrower, such as the random name picker.

How to play

  1. Everyone stands up, or sits on their desk if the class allows it. Players should be spread out so they can see each other.
  2. The judge picks a first thrower at random and says “Go”. From now on, nobody may make a sound.
  3. The thrower makes a gentle, catchable throw to any other player.
  4. A player is out if they talk, laugh out loud or make any noise, drop a good throw, make a throw that cannot be caught, or throw the ball back to the person who just threw it to them.
  5. Players who are out sit down quietly and stay silent too. In many classes, a sitting player who makes a sound costs the game a point or slows down the next round.
  6. The last player standing is the winner. Pick a new first thrower at random and play again.

Rules vary between classes. Some teachers ban throwing the ball back to the person who threw it, and some make every throw go to someone who has not had the ball yet. Agree on the rules before the first throw.

A fair first thrower

The first thrower has a small advantage: they choose who gets the ball first. If the same few students always start, the game can feel unfair. Let the random name picker or the picker wheel choose the first thrower each round, and remove names once they have started so everyone gets a turn over the week. Our guide to classroom games with a random picker has more ways to use a random picker in class.

How long does a round last?

This depends a lot on the class. The table below is only a rough guide. It assumes that about one player goes out every 4 throws and that each throw takes about 3 seconds. “Class” is the number of players, “Outs” is how many players need to go out before one is left, “Throws” is the rough number of throws, and “Minutes” is the rough length of a round.

A careful, quiet class may go much longer, and an excited class much shorter. If rounds drag on, add a time limit or a rule such as “no throws to the same person twice in a row”. If rounds end too fast, give each player two lives.

Teacher tips

  • Check the room first: move bags off the floor and keep the ball away from windows and screens.
  • Explain what counts as a good throw, such as an underarm throw to the chest.
  • Be quick and calm when calling someone out, so the game stays quiet.
  • Give sitting players a job, such as watching for noises or counting throws.
  • Use it as a reward or brain break, not as a punishment.

Variations

  • Two balls: add a second ball once the group is used to the game.
  • Spelling or maths ball: the judge whispers a word or a sum; the player who catches the ball must write the answer before they throw.
  • Wrong hand: players catch and throw with their non-writing hand.
  • Team silent ball: split the class into two teams and see which team has more players left after five minutes.

For more quiet classroom games, try heads up seven up, sleeping lions or hot potato.

For a quiet game that is pure luck, try four corners, where the counter calls a corner with their eyes closed.

FAQ

How do you play silent ball?

Players throw a soft ball to each other without making a sound. You are out if you talk, drop a catchable ball or make a bad throw. The last player standing wins.

What are the rules of silent ball?

No noise, gentle catchable throws, no dropping good throws and, in many classes, no throwing the ball straight back. The judge decides who is out.

What ball should you use?

A soft foam ball, a small beach ball or a beanbag. Avoid hard balls indoors.

How many players do you need?

About 8 to 30 works well. With fewer players, give each player two lives.

The judge picks the first thrower, ideally at random with a name picker, so everyone gets a turn.
