Hangman Game: Rules, Best Letters and Classroom Tips

Hangman is a word-guessing game for two or more players with pencil and paper or a whiteboard. One player thinks of a word and shows only a row of blanks; the others guess letters one at a time. Every wrong guess adds a line to a drawing, and the guessers must find the word before the drawing is finished.

What You Need

  • Two or more players, or a whole class in teams.
  • Paper and pencil, or a board and marker.
  • A word for each round.

How to Play

  1. Choose the word. The setter picks a word and draws one dash for each letter.
  2. Guess a letter. A guesser calls out a letter.
  3. Right letter. The setter writes it in every place it appears.
  4. Wrong letter. The setter writes it to the side and adds one part to the drawing.
  5. Solve or lose. Guessers may try the whole word at any time. They win if they complete it before the drawing is done; otherwise the setter wins.

Agree on the number of wrong guesses before you start. Six is common (head, body, two arms, two legs); add a face, hands or feet for an easier game.

Which Letters to Guess First

We counted how often each letter appears in a large English word list, the one included with Linux systems, which has about 355,000 lowercase words. The table shows the share of words of each length that contain the letter at least once:

Letter4-letter6-letter8-letter
E33%58%67%
A37%47%53%
S27%37%50%
I23%37%54%
R22%39%49%
O27%32%42%
T20%30%41%
N18%32%44%
Z2%3%3%

The list includes many rare words, so real game words will differ a little, but the pattern is clear. Vowels and S, R, T and N are the safest first guesses, and rare letters like Z almost always cost a wrong guess. It also shows why short words are harder to guess: a 4-letter word has fewer letters to hit, so even E is missing from two out of three.

Tips for Setters

  • Short words with rare letters, like jazz or quiz, are the hardest.
  • Avoid names and very rare words unless everyone agrees.
  • Give a category, such as animals or food, for younger players.
  • Write wrong letters neatly so nobody guesses the same letter twice.

Classroom Variations

  • Kinder drawings: many teachers draw a snowman melting, a flower losing petals or a spider climbing instead of a hanging figure.
  • Team hangman: split the class into teams and take turns guessing; use a Random Name Picker to choose who answers.
  • Vocabulary hangman: use only words from this week’s spelling list.
  • Phrase hangman: guess a whole proverb or film title, with spaces shown.
  • Wheel style: guessers must buy vowels by first finding two consonants.

Where the Game Comes From
